24

Key Point: We all have the same amount of time in a day. Simplifying and prioritizing your life will help you get what you want.

I’m willing to bet you don’t have an advanced degree in planetary motion, so I’ll try to keep this one simple: your day on earth only last for 24 hours. This rule holds true regardless of who you are, what you do, or how much money pads your bank account.

The titans of commerce, philanthropy, and entertainment have just as much time as you and I do to accomplish their tasks. Bill Gates, President Obama, and you all have the same amount of time. Think about that for a moment. Let it sink in.

It’s absolutely amazing how many people have decided to retire their brains and voluntarily complete their development process at the age of 25 and are basically coasting for the next 50+ years. Seriously?! 25 is when most of us consider ourselves as adults and it’s a great time to reevaluate your priorities and make the necessary adjustments, but you’re never too old (or young) to adjust the direction of your life.

Please don’t mistake my rambling for promoting being a workaholic, because that is NOT what I’m referring to, but work hard when you have to work.

I’ve learned that if I’m going to be able to accomplish my goals, I need to limit the scope of my life. Do I want to learn Chinese, Farsi, and Italian? Hell yes! Can I do it? Hell yes! Should I attempt to learn them? Not now. If I spent the time to learn those languages something else would definitely suffer. There is NO other way around this. The trick is to limit your scope. For me that means limiting what I focus on to the following (in order of importance):

  1. Daughter
  2. Family
  3. Entrepreneurial endeavors
  4. Friends
  5. Hobbies

This tiny list keeps me really busy and leaves me nearly zero time to mess around. Learning how to simplify the scope of what I work on goes hand in hand with my quest to live a minimalist lifestyle.

If you are fortunate enough to have free time in your day, are you choosing to spend it on learning something new, working on your side/dream projects, reading a good book? Or are you aimlessly browsing the internet in search of a millionth meme that stopped being funny 15 seconds after their creation or watching yet another mind-numbing “reality” show on TV? This is the time you can never get back! Get up from that couch. Do something that will benefit you or the people around you.

What do you do with the 24 hours a day you’re given?
